Team Australia Wrestlers show grit and talent at the 2025 Oceania Wrestling Championships

Team Australia delivered a strong and determined performance at the 2025 Oceania Wrestling Championships, earning five medals2 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze—in a regional event that featured the best wrestling talent from across the Pacific.

Facing tough competition from nine nations, the Australian contingent stood out for its technical discipline, sportsmanship, and a new generation of wrestlers who proved they are ready for the world stage.

“We’re proud of the effort our team gave,” said a spokesperson from Wrestling Australia. “Our athletes showed they can not only compete—but win—against the best in Oceania.”


🥇 Gold Medal Highlights

Among the standout performers was Tsuchika Shimoyamada, who captured gold in the Senior Greco-Roman 72 kg division. His commanding performance included a dominant 11-0 win in the final and highlighted his experience and elite-level skill.

In the U20 category, Australia struck gold in freestyle through rising talents who executed strong technical matches and showcased development potential. These wins helped solidify Australia’s position as a consistent medal contender across divisions.


🥈 Silver and 🥉 Bronze Medal Efforts

Team Australia added:

  • 2 silver medals, including close finals in the senior Greco-Roman 82kgs weight class and the 57kgs senior women’s division
  • 1 bronze medal earned in a competitive senior 79kg bracket

These results underscore Australia’s breadth of talent and the importance of international exposure for emerging wrestlers.


🌍 A Regional Event with Global Importance

The Oceania Wrestling Championships brought together elite athletes from New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, French Polynesia (Tahiti), Palau, Kiribati, American Samoa, Marshall Islands, and Australia, making it one of the most competitive regional wrestling events in recent years.

With over 100 athletes across freestyle, Greco-Roman, and beach wrestling, and age groups ranging from U17 to Senior, the competition served as a key stepping stone toward global qualification events.

“Events like this prepare our athletes for the pressures of international competition,” said one of the Australian coaches. “It’s invaluable experience heading into our next Olympic cycle.”


🔭 On the Road to Paris, Dakar, and Beyond

Wrestling Australia is now looking ahead to a packed calendar, including:

  • The 2025 Pacific Mini Games (Palau)
  • The 2026 Youth Olympic Games (Dakar, Senegal)
  • The 2027 Pacific Games (Tahiti)
  • And long-term targets: the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane
