Passing of Olympian – Stephen Raskovy (VIC) 1964 Wrestling

Wrestling Australia is saddened to hear of the passing of Olympian Stephen Raskovy.

Stephen (Steve) was born on 25 November 1936 in Budapest and competed at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games in Wrestling.

Steve competed in the men’s Greco-Roman middleweight.

Steve dedicated the best part of six decades to wrestling as Olympian, competitor, coach and manager which earned him an OAM in the 1986 Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to sport.

Steve happily passed on his experience to others and his advice was always “ Do homework, because if you only do as much work as the rest of the club then you won’t be a champion”!

Steve paid tribute to his adopted citizenship, almost 60 years after he fled his birthplace of Budapest.  “Above all, I’m a very proud Australian,” he said.

Steve sadly passed away yesterday, 31 May 2021.
